Now that 2015 is coming to a close, we thought it would be helpful to reflect on where the industry might be in a few years -- by sharing three analyses by our fellow industry analysts TrendForce, CB Insights, and Digi-Captial. [Greenlight VR provides independent forecasts in its reports.]
TrendForce
Market researcher TrendForce forecasts that the total value of the virtual reality market, including both hardware and software, will reach $70 billion by 2020. That would be a tenfold increase from the $6.7 billion that TrendForce expects the industry to generate in 2016.
CB Insights
CB Insights reports that Q3’15 saw an increase in both deals and funding, reaching the second-highest funding tally of all-time at $166mm, and just the second quarter ever of 20 or more deals. Given this momentum, it is important to keep in mind the most active investors in AR and VR as they lead new potential funding rounds in 2016 and 2017. CB Insights reports that Rothenberg Ventures, Google Ventures, and Intel Capital have been the most active VCs in AR/VR since 2012.
Digi-Capital
Digi-Capital completed the first technical benchmarking across AR/VR head mounted displays globally, and reports that VR is ahead of AR today in terms of market readiness. It will be important to keep these benchmarks as a point of reference as products and features improve throughout 2016 and 2017.
