As the premier event for the mobile computing and connectivity industry, MWC plays host to many of the top innovators in technology. This year’s theme of Intelligent Connectivity foregrounded key areas of innovation poised to experience disruption from initial implementations of 5G, such as Digital Trust, Industry 4.0, and virtual and augmented reality (“xR”).

Greenlight Insights has identified key recurring themes and content trends most relevant to xR executives and strategists, as well as important announcements and notable exhibitions from the show floor.

“As evidenced at MWC 2019, the telecom industry is bullish on AR and VR as a major application of 5G,” wrote JC Kuang, Analyst at Greenlight Insights, in the firm’s post-conference report: “MWC 2019: Virtual & Augmented Reality Highlights.”

“As one of the most visible and compelling applications of ultra-reliable low latency communications and enhanced mobile broadband, streaming xR content was a central theme for network operators,” added Kuang.

Greenlight Insights had two analysts at MWC 2019, which was held in Barcelona, Spain, between February 25-28, 2019. The analysts’ findings are captured in the inaugural post-conference report, “MWC 2019: Virtual & Augmented Reality Highlights.” The analysts focused on these compelling transformative technologies:

Some of the analysts’ conclusions from the conference report include:

  • The telecom industry is bullish on AR and VR as a major application of 5G. As one of the most visible and compelling applications of ultra-reliable low latency communications and enhanced mobile broadband, streaming xR content was a central theme for network operators and infrastructure providers.
  • Major MWC announcements included new AR devices from Microsoft and Vuzix. Taken together with the upcoming VR headsets, competition for xR hardware intensified.
  • Established hardware providers are continuing to push thresholds for visual fidelity in xR further in recognition of new competitors in the high-end enterprise space.
  • Overall barriers to entry into the xR space are falling and are thus enabling emerging new solutions, including market research and visualization, soft skills training, and cloud gaming.
