SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 25, 2018) — According to a new study by Greenlight Insights and RoadToVR, the Total Global VR Industry Revenue is expected to reach $48.2 Billion in 2022. The growth of standalone headsets from major OEMs is a key factor in this outlook as more consumer content and enterprise applications are made available on those devices.
Headsets are projected to drive the growth of global spending in the next five years. Particularly, unit sales of standalone head-mounted displays, such as the Oculus Go, are projected to increase 300% by the end of 2018 as more OEMs bring their devices to the market. According to forecasts by Greenlight Insights, standalone headsets are expected to reach 13.8 million units sold by 2022.
“HMD sales faced significant adoption challenges in 2016 and 2017, but we are beginning to see a shift in interest as prices fall precipitously and more product models are made available," says J.C. Kuang, Analyst at Greenlight Insights. "The benefits of the Oculus Go and HTC Vive Focus to the industry will provide the groundwork for high-quality, untethered content - a key driver in mass adoption.”
China currently leads the standalone market with the HTC VIVE Focus’ release earlier this year. Lenovo, Oculus, Pico, and HTC have already launched or announced plans to release standalone headsets in the United States during 2018.
